About the Project
Completed in an advanced typography and layout class, this project was meant to test the ability to use type as an artistic indicator. A full figure was created using specially-placed lines of text and a single piece of the original photograph. The text used was to be an original phrase, and any font or punctuation within the phrase needed to be included in each line that was placed. Variations in the text could only show in the font size or the letter at which each line began. Using these parameters, a typographic art piece was constructed to convey a message.
Through the Process
After research, brainstorming, and consulting our instructor, I selected this photo taken by Fotis Fotopoulos for its dynamic pose. The figure was then isolated and blocked in grayscale to help determine the best fonts and words to use, and how to best place dark, bold lettering. Specific areas were tested with different layouts, areas that could prove complicated or hard to discern with type, and, after several edits and finalization, the geometric piece of photo could be placed within the figure. I opted to use a triangle to utilize direction and movement, and wanted the chosen area to be an example of the power of "momentum." The final design successfully combines elements of type and imagery to express its motion.
