About the Project
Kitsch refers to a style that is deemed tacky or ironic. The challenge here was to create packaging
for a kitsch product of our own design. A little doll was procured to play on the stereotype of scary stories and
unsettling feelings. This open-ended project resulted in a custom dieline and a product ready to haunt any setting.
Through the Process
Four spot colors were available for this design and were chosen to convey old, dark buildings with a hint of candelight and the mystic. The box was made to look like an aging mausoleum equipped with boarded up windows and an iron gate. A significant challenge I faced was the texture of the hand-drawn stone background. Photoshop was used heavily during this project to make corrections. The orginal dieline was too tall, and an entire row of brick needed to be removed to fix it. This also made the wood planks sit at odd angles and they needed to be redrawn to fit with the new dimensions. Applying a spot color tint to the background also removed many mid tones in the stone, so adjustments in contrast were painted on in an organic, rotten manner- better highlighting its decrepit nature. To keep the doll in place, an insert was made to fit perfectly within the package, and to ominously hold the doll’s limbs in view of the plastic sealed windows. Despite its humorous details, this product indeed causes some creepy feelings to those who stare it for too long.
